Is a medical school online degree possible? Learn if a student can go to med school online or if it's simply an Internet myth.

In the past, a stigma was attached to online education. Students would not consider this option when it first began. However, times have changed and more and more students are choosing to use e-learning. There are many reasons for a person to attend school virtually.

The first being a matter of distance, especially in regards to older students who strive to earn higher degrees after their Bachelors. Perhaps a student lives in South Carolina and desires to attend Boston University? It is now possible, when before it would have involved a complete relocation and change of jobs.

Thus, as more students began to look towards a virtual school, especially if they attended prestigious undergraduate programs, the stigma faded away.

The second reason involves convenience, relieving many students of time spent commuting from work to class and back home again. A person can be educated on a lunch break, or after work in her/his free time. The third reason is obvious, online courses can be significantly cheaper than a regular university.

Online Medical College for a Certified Medical Assistant

For e-learning in the medical field, the majority of students who choose this option are professional health care workers who would like the opportunity to advance their degrees in the field of medical assistance. In other words, their virtual education can be likened to continuing education programs at traditional universities.

Popular areas of study are: surgical technology; clinical lab assistance; phlebotomy; medical coding and transcription; public health administration and medical records.

For example, the University of Phoenix rates amongst the top colleges online. Through the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Development, a student can take medical coding and billing classes in the non-credit program.

Each course counts for 0.5 continuing education units, which employers look upon highly as a sign of commitment in their employees. Some professions may even use such courses to evaluate their employees for a promotion or increase in salary.

In fact, many companies encourage continual education by providing a tuition reimbursement program. A health care professional who wants to pursue online education should ask her/his Human Resources department about such a program.

Online Medical Courses for Internal Medicine Physicians

Current physicians can also take part in the world of virtual education. Many doctors like this idea because when they enter the field, they do not realize who will make up their patient base in the future.

For instance, if elderly patient visits become more frequent in the doctor's office, s/he may want to take a course on geriatrics to serve the community to her/his best ability. Additionally, if a doctor sees many patients with mental illnesses, s/he can take online classes in that subject area along with referring patients to a trained psychologist or psychiatrist.

At Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education, the mission is "to optimize patient care. To this end, our programs are designed to provide the most up to date information and strategies for physicians and allied health professionals."

Physicians can register for classes in a host of subject areas that may be unfamiliar to them, or they haven't studied since medical school. Areas include: addiction; Alzheimer's disease; electrocardiography; malpractice suits and a slew of courses in genetics. Students will receive certificates with the Harvard Medical School logo atop when they've completed their studies.

Online medical schools are for everyone nowadays. From technician to practicing physician, online courses can aid a student's career both in moving up the ladder and improving overall patient care.

These two articles, Free Tuition Medical School and Scholarships for Medical Students, discuss ways to attend traditional medical school free or at minimal cost.

I can say as a student in Nursing, we teach ourselves anyway.. there is so much information/reading not a single professor could teach that in a lecture. So I could see myself doing most of the learning online and do clinicals at the hospitals with professor/clinical instructor. So it's not that you could trust or not to somebody who got his degree on the internet, it is how much they know. I know doctors who finished med school and they are absolute dummies
