For life coaches who want to write a book, learn tips on how to start the writing process, such as finding your message, your focus and the right editor.

Life coaches are often told to write a book. But if you are any type of coach--life coach, success coach, business coach, etc.--most likely, you're a speaker, not a writer. Therefore the idea of sitting down and putting pen to paper is daunting and nerve-wracking. So, how do you start the book you've always wanted to write?

Life Coaches, What is Your Message?

The first question to ask yourself is: Why do I want to write my book? Coaches are different than the typical nonfiction or fiction writer because their main goal is to help others. It is a noble and honorable goal, and along with it, each coach should have a message to the world. As a book manuscript editor, when I talk with coaches, that's the intial question I ask them. And I receive a variety of responses: some coaches know exactly what their message is, while others are stumped. What happens if you're in the latter category?

Coaches Need to Focus

What I find is when a coach doesn't know her/his message, it's because s/he isn't focused. For example, when I follow coaches on Twitter, I avoid the Twitter profiles that read: "I'm a life coach, internet marketer, dog walker and best friend. I teach people to love life!" What exactly does that mean? It's a very confusing message to the world, and even though it's Twitter, it's still your message. Compare that disjointed message with this one: "I'm an empowerment coach for teenage girls. I teach girls the principles of healthy self-esteem and how to carry them into every aspect of their life." How focused and clear is that message!

Hire an Editor or Writing Coach

We all need motivation, even writers do. But you especially do if you're used to public speaking or giving teleseminars and/or webinars and NOT used to writing. Entering the writing world, setting a writing schedule and learning how to find your voice is overwhelming. Therefore, it's best to find an editor or writing coach who can help you in this endeavor.

When doing so, make sure the writer/editor offers some sort of free consultation, so you can see if s/he is the best fit for you and your potential book. Ask if s/he offers a package specifically for coaches writing books. And lastly, if you're getting a thorough service, be prepared to spend money. Your investment may be thousands of dollars, but it will allow you to have the best book possible.

If you're a life coach, or any other type of coach, and you're committed to writing THE book this year, then follow the steps above and you'll be on the path to writing success.
